As a parent, you only want the best, most healthy experience for your child. But just like with any condition or illness, your child may struggle to communicate if they are dealing with foot problems. We specialize in treating a variety of conditions in patients of all ages and want to help inform you about some of the signs that your child might be dealing with a foot problem. If your child displays any of these signs, we encourage you to give us a call so that we can give him or her a full examination and diagnosis if needed. Should your child require treatment, we can develop a customized treatment plan to best address his or her needs.
1. Your child has trouble keeping up with his or her peers
Have you noticed that your child tends to lag behind when playing outside or engaging in sports activities? This may be due to tired legs or feet as fatigue is common with certain foot conditions.
2. Your child withdraws from his or her favorite activities
Has your child suddenly expressed disinterest in activities such as sports that he or she usually enjoys? Reluctance to participate in these active engagements could be a result of heel pain, especially in children between 8 and 14 years old. Repetitive stress from sports can cause muscle strain and inflammation of the growth plate. This can cause a weak area in the back of your child’s heel, making it painful to be active.
3. Your child often hides his or her feet
Changes in the shape and color of your foot and nails are important indicators that you may have a foot problem. Children may be hesitant to bring attention to these changes out of fear that they may have to see a doctor. It is important that you regularly check your child’s feet for any changes that may require medical attention, as some children may be suffering in silence. When examining your child’s feet, make note of any calluses, growths, skin discoloration, or redness and swelling around the toenails. Be sure to contact us so we can help determine the best way to help your child.
4. Your child often trips and falls
While every child can be clumsy at times, repetitive episodes could be a sign of in-toeing, balance problems, or a neuromuscular condition. Contact us if your child is tripping and falling more frequently than usual or if you suspect there may be a problem.
5. Your child often complains of foot pain
Having foot pain at a young age is never normal. If your child suffers a minor foot injury, be sure to monitor it closely. Any swelling or pain that lasts more than a few days could indicate a more serious problem. Be sure to give us a call and schedule an examination should those symptoms persist.
